This 4-hour class will serve as an introduction into fire chemistry and fire dynamics, with an emphasis on a practical understanding of both areas. The oxidation reaction, the basic combustion reaction and the combustion properties of gases, liquids and solids will be examined. Energy, power, heat transfer and heat flux will be defined and explained. The differences between flaming fire and smoldering fire will be discussed. The methods of heat transfer and the stages of fire development will be examined in detail. The issue of ventilation and flashover and its effect on the fire scene will be reviewed.
